Hey Bears! Welcome BACK to The Bear Bulletin, where we write all about M-A Leadership’s hard work. As the month comes to a close, we are going to be charting all of our events, outreach, and spirit from the spooky season!
October is a notorious month for us L-Ship bears; it's full of events and hard, hard work. Regardless, it is one of our favorites. We switch committees mid-way through, which is always a cause for excitement, as well as putting on some of the best events of the year, like Powderpuff and Homecoming. Introducing the brand-new MA-sters Mini Golf event, hosted from October 1–3, which turned the Green into a five-hole course built with Aaron’s help. It had ramps, tunnels, and obstacles made from L-Ship supplies. Students played during lunch in a lively atmosphere of support and cheers, and each player received donut holes. Additionally, the top four scorers even won In-N-Out lunches! The course looked great, the scorecards were cute, and the event, though small, brought the school together with fun and lots of smiles on the Green.
Continuing their work into October, the Lunchtime Events committee hosted a Watermelon Eating Competition on the first. Featuring six tubs of watermelon and a race to see who could finish first, the event gathered lots of participation and energy. The week after, on October 8th and 9th, Arts and Crafts returned to the Green for two days of creativity and relaxation. Students participated in activities such as friendship bracelet making and face painting, offering a colorful and calming break from the school day. Small events like these may seem insignificant, but a large part of our job as Leadership students is to put smiles on faces as much as we can, which these events and this committee definitely succeeded in.
Our Custodial Appreciation Event is all about celebrating M-A’s amazing custodial staff and showing them how much they’re valued. The morning crew got a personally picked breakfast from Jason’s Café to start their day off right, while the night crew enjoyed a steak dinner, outdoor games like volleyball and spike ball, and a white elephant gift exchange. With help from Sergio, the Head of Custodians, everything was planned around their schedules to make sure both crews could relax, have fun, and feel appreciated.
Pickle Day took place on October 7th on the blacktop during lunch and brought together around 30–40 students for a fun mix of activities, including a pickleball tournament, pickle pong, and photos with a wooden pickle cutout. Six L-Ship students dressed up in pickle costumes and handed out plates of mini pickles. This day was super fun and was highly requested!
On Friday, October 10th, the Powderpuff committee hosted M-A’s annual Powderpuff game during lunch in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event brought together students, staff, and our whole community for a hype Junior vs. Senior battle. Class jerseys and a bake sale helped raise funds for breast cancer awareness, and a collaboration with Thrive Causemetics supported a charity (Bay Area Young Survivors) through product sales and donations. Ending in a win for the Seniors, the game gave students a fun yet meaningful break from school while generating spirit. As it does each year, Powderpuff '25 highlighted M-A’s dedication to community and compassion.
The committee that prepares for our annual Canned Food Drive worked hard this month on a partnership with Green Bubble Boba and on getting all of the behind-the-scenes work done that is essential for CFD to run smoothly. They ended up making more than $300 from their partnership, which will go towards our fresh food purchases before D-Day. Much more on their efforts is to come in our November issue!
The Rally Committee hosted the Homecoming Rally on October 17th, bringing together over 2,200 students for the first indoor rally in seven years. They decorated the gym with camo, posters for class seating, and a high-energy setup that started with student Matthew Teeple playing electric guitar as students entered. The MCs opened with a joke before Matthew performed an incredible national anthem. The rally itself featured a balloon pop relay between Punt Club, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Chess Club, as well as performances from Pacific Islanders and the teachers. The Bear vs. Gator fight set to “Kung Fu Fighting” had all of us laughing, and the class competition with plungers and scooters ended in a senior victory. The event was a huge success that showed off the Rally Committee’s teamwork, creativity, and school spirit!
Additionally, Hoco Spirit Week was incredibly successful, with some of the best participation we've seen in years. We urge all students to keep this going in the future!
Homecoming 2025 took place the day after rally, on October 18th from 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. with the theme Garden of Greece. After a morning set-up of decorations for L-Ship, we successfully gathered 1,012 students into the gym! The music was amazing, and everyone had so much fun dancing and nearly getting knocked over in the crowded mosh. Everyone was offered free water and honey-dipped donut holes inspired by Greek flavors, all organized by the Homecoming committee. Staying late to clean up always gets some groans from Leadership students, but as always it really just shows us how well we can work together as a whole. Hoco this year was just as fun as it has been in previous years, which means we know we've done something right.
As always, this year’s Trick or Treat Street was a huge success! Held on October 29th centered on the Green, the night featured a club door decorating competition where kids could trick-or-treat around campus. Families enjoyed a variety of Halloween-themed activities, including pin the hat on the witch, pumpkin decorating, and cauldron toss, along with stage games like freeze dance and musical chairs. Over 600 families joined in for an night full of candy, games, and fun! We can't wait for next year.
8th Grade Info Night was held on October 8th, during which prospective families of our school came together in a night of teacher presentations, self-guided tours, and a student panel. All of this was backed by L-Ship students being leaders of groups of hundreds of parents, answering any questions they had about the school their child will hopefully attend.
Halloween on October 31st consisted of a scary number of minions on campus. Though normally, us L-Ship students are only figuratively Amo's minions, this Halloween we were all dressed up as them, and he was Gru, our leader! Slightly cult-ish, but we still looked cute doing it.
In other news, signing up for canning shifts started on the last Wednesday of October! We had a huge amount of sign-ups even on the first day. Our second-quarter committees are now all focused on making our annual CFD the most impactful yet, especially in these times of increased food insecurity. It's looking good so far; 5,000 pounds of food were brought in on the first weekend! To know more about all of that future success, however, you'll just have to wait for our November bulletin. Until then, get canning, Bears!
